"3:01 p.m.: Following outrage over Ontario’s move to significantly increase police powers during the pandemic, the vast majority of the province’s forces are refusing to use them.

"The almost immediate response from at least 30 forces, including the largest in Toronto, Peel and elsewhere, is a significant blow to a major part of Premier Doug Ford’s announcement about addressing the alarming rise in COVID-19 cases across the province — measures which were largely panned by scientific and legal experts.

“'Our officers will not be doing random stops of people or cars,' Toronto’s interim police chief Jim Ramer tweeted on Saturday morning.

"He shared information from the force’s main Twitter account, saying they “will continue to engage and enforce equitably and effectively, recognizing always that we must inspire public trust.”
