“A new [Canadian] political party is set to emerge out of the push for a more centrist approach [by Centre Ice] to federal politics that began with last year’s Conservative leadership race, the Star has learned.”

I feel this is a positive development. Currently, with the first-past-the-post Canadian election style, we can elect a majority government, with virtually dictatorial power,

if the party can convince less than 65% of the electorate to vote against them. We call this Canadian democracy.

Currently, I believe that we Canadians have 3 centre-left to left parties – the NDP, the Green Party, and the Liberals. However, on the other side of the spectrum, we have right and far right parties – the People’s Party of Canada and the Conservative Party.

It would be great to add a centre-right party. I am hoping that Centre Ice will morph into such a party. I feel a significant benefit would be, with the vote of the left and right both being split, we would have fewer majorities elected because only 65% of the electorate voted against them.

Hopefully, this would lead to more minority, coalition, or coalition-type governments in which Prime Ministers would have to include two or three parties as part of the government decision-making process. I think that would bring Canada closer to a democracy where 50% +1 are needed to make decisions. Currently, it sits at about 35% of the voters, electing a government with total control of Canada.
